Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Kunst - Fotografie und Film, Note: 2,0, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im Sommer 2007 ersteigerte der Stadthistoriker John Maloof eine Kiste mit 30000 Negativen, da er frühere Aufnahmen von Chicago und Umgebung suchte. Was er jedoch durch Zufall fand, sollte eine Sensation werden. Nach ersten Sichtungen erstellte er einen Blog mit den Aufnahmen und verlinkte diesen mit einem Fotografie-Forum auf Flickr, um professionelle Meinungen zu bekommen. Hunderte Reaktionen innerhalb kürzester Zeit waren nur der Anfang der weltweiten Faszination für das geheime Genie des Kindermädchens Vivian Maier. Über die eigenwillige Einzelgängerin ist bis heute nicht viel bekannt, doch die faszinierenden Fotografien von Menschen auf den Straßen Chicagos und New Yorks schafften es in zahlreiche bekannte Museen und Galerien. Ein Buch mit einigen ihrer Aufnahmen hat ihre Arbeiten einem noch größeren Publikum bekannt gemacht und die Dokumentation "Finding Vivian Maier" wurde erst vor wenigen Wochen vorgeführt. Die Straßenfotografie stellt ein interessantes Genre in der Geschichte- und Theorie der Fotografie dar. Der faszinierendste Aspekt besteht darin, dass Aufnahmen von alltäglichen Situationen an realen Orten gemacht werden und dem Betrachter erst auffällig erscheinen, sobald er einen Abzug davon anschaut. "In their spontaneous and often subconscious reaction to the fecundity of public life, street photographers elevate the commonplace and familiar into something mythical and even heroic." Walter Benjamin geht in seiner Arbeit Kleine Geschichte der Photographie von 1931 sogar noch einen Schritt weiter und erklärt, dass die Fotografie mit ihren Hilfsmitteln, wie den Vergrößerungen und Zeitlupen, dem Betrachter einige unbewusste optische Aspekte erschließt.
