Die Abstinenzbewegung um 1900 ist als Volksbewegung durchaus mit der Basler Anti-AKW-Bewegung zu vergleichen und erfasste samtliche Bevolkerungsschichten. 1918 waren mindestens 7% der Basler Bevolkerung und jedes 5. Schulkind Mitglied eines Abstinenzvereins. Oft unterstutzten die Basler Massnahmen gegen den Alkoholismus, die in der ubrigen Schweiz abgelehnt wurden. Die beiden Autoren beschreiben auf spannende Weise einen wichtigen Aspekt der Basler Sozialgeschichte, der bis jetzt nicht erforscht wurde. Der Alkohol und das Wirtshaus spielten in beiden Basel oft eine zwiespaltige Rolle. Denn das Wirthaus erfullte verschiedene Aufgaben: Es diente zur Verpflegung, bot Gemeinschaft und Unterhaltung. Fur viele war es das eigentliche Zuhause, die warmende Wohnstube. Im Buch findet man indessen die verschiedenen Gesichter des Alkohols. Damit verbunden ist auch das Dilemma der Behorden, die den Exzess und das Elend bekampfen wollen, ohne dem Burger die Freude zu verderben. Das Engagement fur eine abstinente Lebensweise war auch sehr phantasievoll. Die Abstinenten forderten vom Bund wahrend des Ersten Weltkriegs zusatzliche Zuckerrationen, weil sie keinen zu Alkohol vergorenen Zucker konsumierten. Einzelne Gruppen engagierten sich fur Alkoholabhangige, andere wandten sich an die gesamte Bevolkerung oder speziell an Kinder und Jugendliche. Zur so genannten 'Abstinenzarbeit' gehorten Uberzeugungsarbeit, das personliche Beispiel, alkoholfreie Gaststatten, die alkoholfreie Verwertung von Obst und anderen Lebensmitteln, Aufklarung in den Schulen, Offentlichkeitsarbeit oder politische Vorstosse zur Senkung des Alkoholkonsums. Das Buch vermittelt also die vielen Gesichter des Alkoholkonsums und die Reaktionen darauf. Es setzt erste Leitplanken und soll dazu anregen, sich vermehrt mit Alkoholismus und Abstinenz zu beschaftigen.
About the Author: Die Autoren Fabian Brandle, geb. 1970, Studium in Zurich und Basel, forscht und publiziert zur Geschichte der Demokratie, der Volkskultur, der popularen Autobiographik und der Sozialgeschichte des Sports. Hans Jakob Ritter hat die Facher Geschichte, Philosophie und deutsche Literaturwissenschaft an der Universitat Basel studiert und 2007 zur Geschichte von Psychiatrie und Eugenik promoviert. Nachdem er in verschiedenen historischen Forschungsprojekten gearbeitet hat, macht er heute die Ausbildung zum Gymnasiallehrer in den Fachern Geschichte und Deutsch und arbeitet an der Universitat Zurich in einem Forschungsprojekt zur Entwicklung der schweizerischen Berufsbildung.
