El 11 de enero de 2005, Klaus Schwab, Presidente Ejecutivo del World Economic Forum, dio a conocer los nombres de los primeros 237 jóvenes líderes seleccionados y aceptados para tomar parte en el Forum of Young Global Leaders [Foro de Jóvenes Líderes Globales], trabajando en estrecha cooperación con el World Economic Forum. Entre los Jóvenes Líderes Globales se encuentran nombres ilustres como Sergey Brin, co-fundador de Google, y Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Presidente de easyGroup, uno de los mayores transportistas aéreos europeos de bajo costo. Uno de los 49 asiáticos que integraban el grupo de Jóvenes Líderes Globales era Zhang Xin, co-fundadora y co-Directora General de Operaciones de SOHO China, empresa constructora radicada en Beijing. Zhang ha recorrido un largo camino desde su aldea rural sumida en la pobreza de la provincia de Henan (China), donde transcurrió parte de su niñez. En SOHO China, Zhang desarrolló proyectos de construcción vanguardistas a gran escala, entre los que se encuentran SOHO New Town, Commune junto a la Gran Muralla, Jianwai SOHO en Beijing y Boao Canal Village en la isla de Hainan. SOHO trepó a la fama en 2002, cuando Commune junto a la Muralla China obtuvo un premio en la prestigiosa Bienal de Venecia. Inaugurada en 1895, la Bienal de Venecia constituye el foro más importante de la crítica de las artes visuales contemporáneas. Zhang se convirtió en la primera arquitecta no graduada, alabada por su "atrevida iniciativa personal". La "iniciativa personal" es una de las razones principales que despertó nuestro interés en Zhang, quien previamente había trabajado como agente de inversiones bancarias en Goldman Sachs, Nueva York. Pero su historia es algo más que el típico caso "de los andrajos a la riqueza". En un sentido más amplio, Zhang representa una nueva raza de empresarios chinos que han recibido educación superior, afilando sus negocios y su habilidad gerencial en el Occidente antes de regresar a su tierra natal.
