Innerhalb seiner Wohlfahrtsstaatstypologie unterscheidet Esping-Andersen drei Typen von Wohlfahrtsstaaten: den konservativen Typen, den liberalen Typen und den sozialdemokratischen Typen. Diese drei Wohlfahrtstypen sollen in der vorliegenden Arbeit anhand eines jeweils prototypischen Staates (Deutschland, England und Schweden) theoretisch sowie praktisch dargestellt werden. Die wissenschaftliche Arbeit bezieht sich dabei lediglich auf Wohlfahrtsstaaten innerhalb Europas und klammert supranationale Wohlfahrtsstaatlichkeit aus. Auf komplexe politische Diskurse bezüglich der Sozialpolitik soll ebenfalls verzichtet werden, da es sich um eine so-ziologische Analyse der Wohlfahrtsstaatlichkeit handelt und eine detaillierte Beschreibung sozialpolitischer Instrumente und Prozesse wohl eher in den Bereich einer politikwissen-schaftlichen Arbeit fallen würde. Dennoch kann auch hierbei nicht komplett auf eine prägnan-te (historische sowie circa-aktuelle) Beschreibung der sozialpolitischen Instrumentatrien ver-zichtet werden, um die drei Wohlfahrtsstaattypen in ihrer Differenziertheit und Affinität zu kennzeichnen. 2 Was ist ein Wohlfahrtsstaat? Bevor eingehender auf die Wohlfahrtsstaatstypologie Esping-Andersons eingegangen wird, soll ein kurzer Überblick über den aktuellen Stand des Begriffes "Wohlfahrtsstaat" in sozial-wissenschaftlicher Sicht dargestellt werden. Dabei ist sofort anzumerken, das bezüglich dieses Begriffes eine Fülle von diffusen Definitionen existieren.
