Examensarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Geschichte Deutschlands - Erster Weltkrieg, Weimarer Republik, Note: 1,3, Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel (Historisches Seminar), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: [...] Die deutsche Armee bestand in den Jahren 1914-1918 aus durchschnittlich 6,4 Millionen Soldaten. Insgesamt wurden 13,1 Millionen Menschen einberufen, von denen ungefähr 2 Millionen ums Leben kamen und zirka 4,8 Millionen verwundet wurden. Diese Soldaten schrieben über 28 Milliarden Briefe, von denen in der Bibliothek für Zeitgeschichte in Stuttgart ca. 15.000 erhalten sind. Einige sind in Quelleneditionen, wie z.B. in der hier u.a. verwendeten Sammlung Philipp Witkops1 zu finden. Eine Auswertung dieser Briefe muß demnach zwangsläufig lückenhaft bleiben, da theoretisch eine Berücksichtigung der hier nicht verwendeten Zeugnisse ein völlig anderes Bild zeichnen könnte. Wahrscheinlich ist dies jedoch nicht, denn die hier benutzten Briefe und ihre zum Teil erschreckend deutlichen Schilderungen des erlebten Grauens an der Front stammen aus unterschiedlichen Gesellschaftsschichten, sie sind zu verschiedenen Zeiten während des Krieges geschrieben worden. Die Soldaten haben sie sowohl von der Ost- wie auch von der Westfront aus in die Heimat geschickt, und die Verfasser entstammen verschiedenen Waffengattungen. Damit bilden sie zwar keinen repräsentativen Querschnitt durch die verschiedenen Aspekte und Zeitabschnitte des Krieges zu Lande, denn dazu ist die Quellenlage als solche zu unüberschaubar und viele der Briefe sind entweder nicht zugänglich oder gar nicht mehr erhalten, doch sie zeigen aber eine Tendenz auf: eine Tendenz, die Aufschluß über den Krieg und die Situation des Menschen in seinem Angesicht bietet. Feldpostbriefe sind die Fingerabdrücke des Individuums in der Geschichte, die zwar verschieden und einzigartig sind, sich aber dennoch sehr ähneln, wie in dieser Arbeit gezeigt werden wird.
