In der Szene der Zauberklubs und -vereine gilt: Die Zauberkunst existiert mindestens seit der Zeit, da es des Schreibens fähige Menschen gibt. Dafür spricht ein Dokument, der 'Westcar Papyrus', das von einem Zauberkünstler namens Dedi berichtet, der im 3. Jahrtausend v.Chr. das berüchtigte Köpfen und die Wiederherstellung einer Gans vollzog. Das vorliegende Buch setzt sich mit theaterwissenschaftlichen Aspekten der Zauberkunst auseinander, richtet das Hauptaugenmerk dabei auf das vorletzte Jahrhundert und auf Wien. Erst mit dem 19. Jahrhundert ist die Zauberkunst nämlich als moderne und eigenständige Unterhaltungsform, wie wir sie heute kennen und verstehen, entstanden. Wien ist als lukrativer und nahrhafter Boden für diese sich entwickelnde Kunst mit insbesondere drei Magiern bekannt - Leopold Ludwig Döbler, Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser und Anton Kratky-Baschik. Das Buch beschäftigt sich zum einen mit der Frage, warum sich die Zauberkunst zu jener Zeit gerade in Wien zu einer viel gerühmten und geschätzten Vergnügungsform entwickelte und in wie weit diese Form der Unterhaltung Ähnlichkeiten mit anderen Vergnügungen des 19.Jahrhunderts in Wien aufweist. Ein weiteres Ziel des Buches ist es, die Frage zu beantworten, was unter Zauberkunst in Bezug auf Theater eigentlich zu verstehen ist, welche theatralen Aspekte diese artistische Kunstsparte also bietet.
About the Author: Christian Gruber, Jahrgang 1969, ist Austro-Amerikaner von Geburt und lebt in Wien. An der Universität Wien studierte er Theater- Film- und Medienwissenschaften sowie Englisch. Als Zauberkünstler hat er über 1000 Zaubervorführungen nachweislich erbracht, wurde mit insgesamt fünf Ehrenurkunden ausgezeichnet und war von 1996 bis 2011 aktives Mitglied einer der ältesten Magischen Vereinigungen der Welt. Nach Anstellungen als Editor an der TU Wien und als Coach in AMS Projekten betreibt der Autor derzeit als Sprachtrainer die Sprachschule CSE-Languagecoaching in Wien und ist zudem als freier Autor und Künstler tätig.
