Jedes dritte neue Mobiltelefon in Deutschland wird somit ein Smartphone sein (BITKOM Research GmbH, 2011a). Mit dieser Entwicklung zeigen sich signifikante Chancen für neuartige Geschäftsmodelle (Scherf et al., 2008, p. 17) und völlig neue Dimensionen des Marketing, die es so zu nutzen gilt, dass dem Erfolg der digitalen Endgeräte auch die Wirkung des mobilen Marketing folgen wird. Ist von Erfolg die Rede, so geht es meist um Kapital oder Ausgaben, die gewinnbringend investiert wurden. Betrachtet man den Erfolg des Mobile Marketing, so ist ein Trend zu stark ansteigenden Ausgaben zu beobachten. Weltweit werden die Ausgaben für Mobile Marketing von $2,7 Milliarden (2007) auf $19,1 Milliarden im Jahr 2012 wachsen. Die Durchschnitts-kosten für eine Mobile Marketing Kampagne belaufen sich dabei auf $100.000, was eine Verdreifachung der Kosten im Vergleich zum Jahr 2007 darstellt (du Pre Gauntt, 2008, p. 1). Bei Ausgaben in Milliardenhöhe ist es kaum verwunderlich, dass mit steigenden Budgetausgaben auch ein wachsendes Interesse an der Messbarkeit und, damit verbunden, der Effektivitätskontrolle von Mobile Marketing Aktivitäten einhergeht. Günstig für eine effektive Kontrolle im Internet - mobil sowie auch nicht-mobil - sind die "Eigenschaften der Interaktivität und der Digitalisierung" (Skiera/Spann, 2000, p. 2).
