Die alte Waschkäthe saß in ihrem Stübchen im einsamen Berghüttchen und schaute nachdenklich auf ihre gekrümmten Hände, die sie vor sich auf die Knie gelegt hatte. Bis der letzte Abendschein hinter den fernen Waldhöhen verglommen war, hatte sie fleißig an ihrem Spinnrad gearbeitet. Jetzt hatte sie es ein wenig beiseite gerückt, die Hände mußten müde sein, die so gekrümmt und abgearbeitet aussahen. Die Alte seufzte auf und sagte vor sich hin: "Ja, wenn ich noch könnte wie früher!" Sie meinte wohl arbeiten, denn das hatte sie tapfer ihr Leben lang getan. Nun war sie alt geworden, und die früher so rüstige und unermüdliche Waschfrau konnte gar nichts mehr tun, als ein wenig spinnen, und das trug sehr wenig ein. Dennoch hatte sie sich schon seit ein paar Jahren auf diese Weise durchgebracht und noch dazu ihr Enkelkind erhalten, das bei ihr lebte und noch nicht viel verdienen konnte. Es hatte zwar auch seine kleinen Einnahmen, denn es war ein flinkes und geschicktes Kind. Heute erfüllte die Großmutter aber noch ein besonderer Kummer, der ihr schon seit dem frühen Morgen das Herz schwer gemacht hatte. Ihr Enkelkind, das fröhliche Trini, das sie von klein auf erzogen hatte, war zwölf Jahre alt geworden. Es sollte im Frühling aus der Schule entlassen werden und dann in einen Dienst gehen. Heute früh nun war der ferne Vetter unten aus dem Reußtal heraufgekommen und hatte der alten Kusine den Vorschlag gemacht, das Kind ihm anzuvertrauen. Er hatte zwar selbst nicht viel und konnte nichts geben, aber es war dort unten ein guter Verdienst zu finden. Denn die neue Fabrik, die an der wasserreichen Reuß erbaut worden war, brauchte viele Arbeitskräfte. Dort konnte das Trini die Woche über ein schönes Stück Geld verdienen, und daneben konnte es die nötige Arbeit in seinem Haus verrichten, dafür wollte er es beherbergen. Da seine Frau kränklich war und sie keine Magd anstellen konnten, so war ihnen das Kind erwünscht, denn sie wußten, daß es groß und kräftig und sehr geschickt war.
