Walter Model fue probablemente el mejor comandante superior aleman de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Frente al metodico Rundstedt, o a un Manstein capaz de captar todos los problemas operacionales de una situacion, Model era un soldado energico, con una fuerte carga de desprecio hacia las jerarquias, y dirigia a sus hombres desde el frente. Comandante atrevido y a veces rayano en la imprudencia, su avance hacia Kiev en 1941, la resistencia en el saliente de Rzhev, el contraataque en Varsovia en agosto de 1944 o la rapida reaccion a la Operacion Market-Garden se cuentan entre las mejores batallas alemanas de la guerra. La resistencia de la Wehrmacht en el Oeste del otono de 1944 se debio, entre otros factores, al talento defensivo de Model. Model fue un partidario convencido del smo. Vio como su carrera se propulsaba hacia arriba con la llegada de Hitler al poder. No participo en el complot anti-hitleriano de julio de 1944. «Soy un soldado», fue su respuesta cuando le pidieron ayuda para acabar con Hitler. Por lo menos hasta despues de la ofensiva de las Ardenas, conservo el favor de Hitler. Era el soldado ideologicamente solido y «popular», sin los matices aristocraticos de la casta profesional del estado mayor, que el dictador sonaba para dirigir su Wehrmacht. En los momentos de la debacle final del Tercer Reich, Model saco a relucir lo mejor de su oficio como soldado y lo peor como ser humano. Para el, la victoria era una cuestion de fe y voluntad radicales. El derrotismo y la falta de entrega absoluta eran sinonimos de cobardia. Todo estaba subordinado al exito de las operaciones. Incluso cuando ya no habia esperanza alguna, Model continuo dictando ordenes irracionales y criminales hasta que, en abril de 1945, se quito la vida antes de caer prisionero
