. . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Abstract: The geographic centre of Europe is located near Lithuania's capital city, Vilnius (Wilno, Vilne, Wilna). In the last two centuries this multilingual city has several times been the scene of war. This had disastrous consequences for the historic "white city" especially in World War II when it twice - in June 1941 and in July 1944 - experienced heavy fighting resulting in almost complete devastation and the loss of many human lives. The author did not know much of all this when he came across a bundle of old Wehrmacht army service letters two uncles had sent to their family in World War II. After the war they had been declared missing in action and never been heard of any more. However, the old letters showed that the traces of Uncle Franz got lost in the military actions around Vilnius in July 1944. This made the author start years of private research on the internet, in archives and on-site. In the course of these enquiries he also made contact with and interviewed contemporary witnesses. He got friendly support from a lot of other people doing research on the events for various reasons. Expectedly, it was not possible to find out what exactly happened to Uncle Franz (although the enquiries brought to light some useful information as to the fate of killed or missing soldiers and civilians). But there gradually developed a complex picture of the events in Vilnius and the turmoil of war. We are confronted with Nazi crime and Nazi violence, with the Holocaust, but also with cruel revenge on the side of the victors. And there are a few "righteous gentiles," instances of bravery and selflessness, on either side of the front. The enquiry is supposed to be continued as an open project of "IG-Vilnius-1944" in cooperation with tracing services. . .
