Cet ouvrage est le fruit d'un récit à plusieurs voix, et c'est d'abord celui de la vie de la duchesse d'Ayen par sa fi lle, Marie Adrienne Françoise de Noailles, à qui sa propre fi lle rend à son tour hommage en prenant la plume pour évoquer le destin exceptionnel de sa famille dans les méandres de la Révolution française. Adrienne Françoise de Noailles devient marquise de La Fayette en 1774 suite à son mariage avec Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette, qui n'est autre que le héros de la guerre d'Indépendance des États-Unis, au cours de laquelle il joua un rôle décisif en combattant aux côtés de Georges Washington. Revenu d'une Amérique victorieuse et libre, La Fayette s'engage pour la Révolution française et commande la Garde nationale créée en 1789; mais ses convictions politiques l'entrainent, lui et sa famille, dans de tristes péripéties. En effet ne faisant pas l'unanimité auprès de tous malgré ses opinions favorables à la Révolution, il demeure trop modéré, fi dèle au roi et aspirant à la mise en place d'une monarchie constitutionnelle. Adulé du peuple encore peu de temps auparavant, il devient impopulaire après avoir dû proclamer la loi martiale en 1791 pour mettre fin à des débordements.

Ne pouvant se défaire des manoeuvres politiques de ses opposants, il est déclaré « traître à la Nation » en 1792 et ne peut que s'exiler. Il se fait arrêter par les Autrichiens et enfermer dans plusieurs prisons, dont celle d'Olmütz, où sa femme et ses fi lles sont contraintes de l'y rejoindre en 1795.

La marquise de La Fayette, emprisonnée dans des conditions précaires, n'a d'autre choix que d'écrire en secret, dans les marges d'un livre, à l'aide d'un cure-dent et d'encre de Chine elle raconte la vie de sa mère la duchesse d'Ayen, qui a été guillotinée en 1794, victime de la Terreur. Libérée, de retour à Paris, la marquise amende son texte avant de le publier clandestinement pour un cercle restreint d'amis.

Sa fille, Madame de Lasteyrie, apporte son témoignage sur l'histoire de sa mère et de son incarcération, et rend compte des vicissitudes d'une période tourmentée et complexe. Ces mémoires nous laissent entrevoir, sur trois générations, la vie de ces femmes emportées dans le tumulte de l'Histoire.

Ce livre, réimprimé en fac-similé par Hachette-BnF, est identique à la publication originale de 1869 conservée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France.
