Aufbauend auf die jeweilige Erhebungsmethode der Befragung und Inhaltsanalyse, sollten empirische Fragestellungen dann in den Gruppen definiert und im weiteren Prozess zu überprüfbare Hypothesen überführt werden. Basierend auf dieser forschungsleitenden Fragestellung, liefern die jeweilig vorangegangenen Operationalisierungen viele Variablen für eine empirische Ausarbeitung. Die Erhebungsinstrumente sind dementsprechend breit angelegt, um viel Freiraum für die Individualisierung zu bieten. Wie zu Anfang erwähnt, befassen sich beide Erhebungen mit dem Phänomen Social TV. Ein Begriff der das Fernseherleben mit dem kommunikativen Austausch der Rezepienten über die Onlinemedien verbindet. Zwar wird das fernsehbegleitende Sprechen von tatsächlich Anwesenden meist in der Begriffsbestimmung berücksichtigt, jedoch wird der Fokus vielmehr auf den kommunikativen Austausch der Rezepienten über die Onlinemedien gelegt. Beschrieben wird die Verschmelzung vom Fernseherleben und sozialer Interaktion über die Onlinemedien, die durch die Entwicklung von mobilen Endgeräten wie Smartphones, Tablets oder Laptops zustande kam und es den Nutzer erlaubt über räumliche Distanzen hinweg sozial zu interagieren.
