In den Jahren 1879-1884 arbeitete Leo N. Tolstoi an seiner "Untersuchung der dogmatischen Theologie". 1891 veröffentlichte L. Albert Hauff unter dem Titel "Vernunft und Dogma" eine Übersetzung des ersten Teils des Werkes. Die vorliegende Neuedition dieser Ausgabe für eine deutschsprachige Leserschaft enthält im Anhang außerdem die Legende von den "drei Greisen" (1886), eine Darstellung von Pavel Birjukov zum theologiekritischen Selbststudium Tolstois (1909) sowie einen Text von Eugen Drewermann ("Das 'Unaussprechliche' als Gegenstand reiner Wortmagie", 1993). Eine Zeitlang versucht Tolstoi, im Raum der Kirche jene Glaubensspur weiterzuverfolgen, die einen Ausweg angesichts seiner Verzweiflung an der "Sinnlosigkeit" des eigenen Lebens eröffnet. Bei der Lektüre eines weit verbreiteten Dogmenhandbuches des Moskauer Metropoliten Makaraji tritt große Ernüchterung ein: "Man denkt unwillkürlich, dass die einfachste, klarste Schlussfolgerung aus allen hervorgegangenen Streitigkeiten nur die eine sei, man solle keine Dummheiten reden, man solle vor allem nicht lehren, was niemand begreifen kann und, was noch wichtiger ist, man solle nicht darauf hin die hauptsächlichsten Grundlagen des Glaubens, die Liebe und die Nachsicht für den Nächsten, erschüttern." Bedeutsam sind für den russischen Dichter nicht abstrakte Dispute, sondern der Schrei nach Erlösung und der Glaubenssinn der einfachen Christenmenschen: "Fragt einen Bauern, ein Weib, was die Dreifaltigkeit sei, so wird von zehn kaum einer antworten, und man kann nicht sagen, dass das von Unwissenheit herrühre. Fragt man aber, worin die Lehre Christi besteht, so antwortet jeder. Das Dogma der Dreifaltigkeit ist nicht kompliziert und nicht lang, warum also kennt es niemand? Deshalb, weil man nicht kennen kann, was keinen Sinn hat." -"Von hundert Frauen und Männern aus dem Volke verstehen nicht mehr als drei die Personen der Dreieinigkeit herzuzählen und nicht mehr als dreißig können sagen, was die Dreieinigkeit sei, verstehe
