About the Book

Het is halverwege de 21e eeuw, rond 2050. De problemen voor de mens op aarde zijn onbeheersbaar geworden als gevolg van een dreiging van oorlogen met kernwapens, wereldwijde migratiestromen als gevolg van overbevolking in juist die gebieden waar meer menselijk leven nauwelijks mogelijk was, klimaatveranderingen door CO2-uitstoot gekoppeld aan een steeds sterkere inperking van het corrigerende effect daarop van de natuur en automatisering, waardoor er steeds minder mensen nog hoefden te werken om te kunnen voorzien in hun eigen levensonderhoud. Die laatsten stortten zich uit pure verveling niettemin wel massaal op de consumptiemaatschappij en vormden in de democratie inmiddels gezamenlijk ook een meerderheid, waardoor zij steeds meer rechten konden opeisen zonder daar plichten tegenover te hoeven stellen. Ook de hoogmoed van de mens als diersoort, zonder het besef dat hoogmoed voor de val komt, speelde een rol, net als vele andere factoren. De democratie had lange tijd in een behoefte voorzien, maar was nu een probleem geworden. Als gevolg van de toegenomen welvaart en de populaire verzorgingsmaatschappij, was die laatste verworden tot een consumptiemaatschappij met louter rechten. Normen waren nog slechts kreten uit het verleden en bijna alle plichten waren afgeschaft. Een kleine, maar groeiende populatie van mensen, zag voor zichzelf geen toekomst meer in die oude wereld. Zij waren op zoek gegaan naar een nieuwe wereld, die zij hadden gevonden in een groot eiland, dat juist als gevolg van de gevreesde klimaatveranderingen zijn ijskap geleidelijk van zich zou afschudden als sneeuw voor de zon. Dat eiland lag bovendien ver verwijderd van de gebieden op aarde waar overbevolking en conflicten waren te verwachten. Tegelijk bereidde men zich in die nieuwe wereld voor op de vestiging van een permanente kolonie op de planeet Mars als extra zekerheid voor overleving van zijn bewoners in de toekomst.
