Både offentlige og private virksomheder er under pres. Siden 1970'erne har produktivitetsudviklingen i det private erhvervsliv været faldende. Samtidig ved vi, at de offentlige udgifter vil eksplodere i takt med, at antallet af ældre stiger fra 25 procent til knap halvdelen af den danske befolkning. Vi har brug for at skifte kurs, og det er her, Lean kommer ind i billedet. Vi ved fra udlandet, at Lean er en tilgang, der gør det muligt at udnytte ressourcerne i en organisation bedst muligt ved systematisk at fjerne alt, der ikke skaber kvalitet for kunden. Men i Danmark tegner der sig et andet billede: Kun få af de mange søsatte Lean-projekter kommer sikkert i havn. De fleste kuldsejler, fordi resultaterne udebliver, medarbejderne yder modstand, og ledelsen bliver optaget af noget andet. Ofte er disse projekter drevet af konsulenter med dyb viden om det, vi i vesten kender som Lean-værktøjskassen. Til gengæld er de Lean-transformationer, der lykkes, altid drevet af ledere med dyb viden om den meget anderledes måde, hvormed Toyota efter Anden Verdenskrig begyndte at bedrive ledelse i Østen. I Vejen til at lykkes med Lean sætter forfatteren fokus på forskellen mellem de mange mislykkedes Lean-projekter, drevet af konsulenter, og de få succesfulde Lean-transformationer, drevet af ledere. Det viser sig, at det største problem ikke er modvilje blandt medarbejdere. Udfordringen skal snarere findes i de mødelokaler, hvor Lean-transformationer besluttes. Hvis man som organisation vil lykkes med Lean, er det vigtigt, at både topledere, Lean-konsulenter og HR-staben forstår, hvad Lean og Lean ledelse er. Lean er en kulturtransformation, som ledere skal involvere deres medarbejdere i ved hjælp af en mere systematisk tilgang til at løse dag-til-dag problemer.
