Kolumbien blickt auf eine lange Geschichte der Gewalt zurück. Probleme und Konflikte aus der Vergangenheit konnten nicht ausreichend gelöst werden, sodass ihre Nachwirkungen in der Gegenwart stets zu spüren waren. Ein Ende der Gewalt war nicht in Sicht. Es entstanden neue Konflikte, die ihren Ursprung ebenfalls in der Vergangenheit fanden. Die Politik trug einen nicht zu vernachlässigenden Teil dazu bei, dass die Vergangenheit unzureichend aufgearbeitet wurde. Dem Staat wurde vorgeworfen, die Vergangenheit zu verschweigen und eine "Politik des Vergessens" zu betreiben. Der expandierende Drogenhandel in den 70er und 80er Jahren ließ neue Probleme aufkommen und führte zur Entstehung neuartiger, aber auch zur Aufrechterhaltung alter Gewalt. Juan Gabriel Vásquez' Roman "El ruido de las cosas al caer" spielt genau vor diesem Hintergrund des Drogenhandels, in den einzelne Figuren des Romans selbst verstrickt sind und auch als Unbeteiligte die Auswirkungen zu spüren bekommen. Auf dieser Grundlage berührt der Roman die literarische Strömung der "Narcoprosa", bei der der Drogenhandel im Mittelpunkt der Handlung steht und dem Leser Einblicke in diesen bietet. Von Quaas wird der Roman sogar aufgrund dessen als Narkoroman ("narconovela") klassifiziert. Auch mit dem Subgenre der Narcoprosa, der "sicaresca", sind Berührungspunkte zu erkennen, denn die Figur des sicarios nimmt eine wichtige Rolle im Handlungsverlauf ein. Durch ein Attentat von zwei "sicarios" auf den Erzähler Antonio Yammara und eine der Hauptfiguren Ricardo Laverde, trägt Antonio starke Verletzungen und eine anschließende Traumatisierung davon.
