About the Book

In August 1967 a young man was killed whilst carrying arms of war on behalf of an organisation known as UmKhonto We Sizwe, an army whose inaugural Paramount Chief was Nelson Mandela. This young man was the first person to die whilst carrying arms of war for the struggle and his body lies in an unknown pauper's grave somewhere in Zimbabwe. His death was the trigger that inspired the creation of this work which is written to record the suffering of ordinary folk in this transition of political power. Whilst leaders are held in high esteem, we disremember the horrors of conflict and the pain of those who suffer for political ideology. Although TOK TOKKIE TOKOLOSH is complete fiction, it is based on historical facts that bubbled out of that time and place in history. As insurrectionary forces gather throughout southern Africa, every character has uniquely painful, threatening and tragic choices to make. And at work underneath it all are the mysterious influences of Tok Tokkie and the malign influence of the Tokolosh...
About the Author: Peter was born in Zimbabwe at a time when it was called Rhodesia. In August 1967, at the age of 24 he was a member of the Reconnaissance Unit of the Rhodesian Police Reserve. Prior to 1967 he had been a conscript in the Armoured Car Division of the Rhodesian Territorial Army. Later on, in 1972, he was drafted into Rhodesian INTAF (Internal Affairs) which later became known as Guard Force. "Tok Tokkie Tokolosh" spans that period and includes stories from all of these military bodies. During this period a group created by Nelson Mandela, known as the Luthuli Detachment, part of uMKhonto We Sizwe (The MK) crossed into Rhodesia and was in combat with Rhodesia security forces. Although he personally never saw action against the Luthuli Detachment, Peter was aware of the battles that went on to flush them out, due to information disseminated by the security forces at the time. One of the members of the MK group was a man named Basil February who, in August 1967, was the first person to die for the new South Africa whilst carrying arms of war on behalf of Nelson Mandela. Basil was posthumously awarded the Mendi Decoration for bravery. It was Basil February's place in history that triggered the birth of this novel.
