About the Author: Who I Am, Why I do this? My name is Ashley "A'Jai Necole" I am a youth mentor, Activist and basketball coach from Lansing Michigan. I am the owner of a company called PROJECT NEXT GENERATION GROUP and host of #thework youth empowerment program. My experience and relevance to the average teen struggles is why I mentor. I myself was an foster child, later adopted and did not have a mentor and although I accomplished a lot in my life it was only after much pain and struggle with depression because of bad choices that nearly cost me my life. Until I found personal development and mentors I had no real value for life, and could not understand the relevance education and my attitude about life had on my future. Once I began to understand who I was, I made it my life's work to empower as many young people as possible, as quickly as possible There is a sense of urgency for me as our youth are finding themselves very lost and depressed, allowing them to fall victim to the influence of alcohol, drugs, suicide and violence amongst themselves or others. Gun violence has taken in 2018 alone 1,907 lives in which 376 were teens between the ages of 12-17 and 70 children between the ages of 0 - 11 years of age. 32 mass shootings recorded this year source - www.gunviolencearchive.org As a youth mentor I have personally lost 7 youth to gun violence and several young adult males, an uncle 27 years who was brutally shot 12 times by his next door neighbor over an argument (2014) (neighbor suffered from severe depression/mental illness). Each death could have been avoided. The impact and the recent shootings in Florida are no different than any other shootings that have impacted any person whether it be the shooters, the victim, the families or the communities that have experienced a loss of life, due to gun violence. Gun violence is a form of violence, and there is a starting point to violent behavior. After years of study I have discovered the common denominators, Mental illness, depression combined with youth having limited or no exposure to resources or mentors that provides an outlet and alternative to violent thinking and behavior. There is no gun law or movement that could remove a split second choice of an individual to use a gun or any other weapon to take the life of another. The only real solution we have is to inspire the next generation with the message that raises awareness of the problem and offers a solution. That is my work!
