About the Book

As I have written this story on "Them and Us" just 16 years ago back in the year of 2002 it indicate that what is now defined as Britain's race relation problems. The situation and events usually referred to as the race relations problem are the outcome of apartheid discrimination and racism which has got a long history, not only within Britain but also within the British Empire. In order to trace that history on colonialism and imperialism, I explain in the story of 'Them and Us' both the colonies were necessary and migrants came to Britain as a form of cheap labour in the 1950s and 1960s. For example the British Nationality Act of 1948 granted in law the right to enter, work and settle in Britain to all colonial and Commonwealth citizens that started almost 70 years ago. Migration from the New Commonwealth to Britain in the early 1950s in direct response to shortage of labour in certain sectors of the British economy and the Indian sub-continent who arrive by selling their labour power for a wage in British factories, hospitals and transport industries were no more or less than migrant labour. Because they belong to a non-white race and were subjected to colonial exploitation. The structure of 'Them and Us' story further follows directly from this alternative to the common sense notion of a race relation problem in Britain. The British Nationality Act (1948) had implicitly confirmed that the Commonwealth was a potential source of labour by granting all Commonwealth citizens as British citizens, with the right of entry and settlement in Britain that started almost 70 years ago.
