A book with two crossed destinies, two very different people, everything separates them. However, they will cross paths, love and hate each other. Life is never a straight highway.
The beginning of the story begins in Laredo, a city in Texas. If we cross the street, we are in Mexico. The choice of the city is not insignificant, the foreigner, or the future migrant, is your neighbor. A few steps away, Mexico has established a new city, the new Laredo. The migrant did not walk for thousands of kilometers, he lived across the street.
Alejandro is the son of migrants, his parents are Mexican, and he too lived about fifty kilometers from Laredo. It is surprising to mention migrants in the United States, apart from Native Americans, all the inhabitants are migrants or descendants of migrants. The term highlights contempt. We talk about Italian-Americans, but never about Irish-Americans. The words we use, the choice of terms, has a meaning.
Laredo, the USA, is the country of sufficiency, you won't starve there if you work, your children go to school, the American way of life will allow them to become rich, and enjoy all the pleasures of the life.
Priscilla is an American girl, she is descended from English migrants who landed here several centuries ago. Blonde, green eyes, no doubt about her origins. His parents are part of the middle class, they observe Mexico with empathy. But the sons of migrants from the South exasperate them. They don't want to integrate into American society. They live in clans, like animals would.
One day, she eats an ice cream on a road that leads nowhere, probably in California, Alejandro sits next to her, he harasses her to get a kiss. He decides that she is his girlfriend. She doesn't respond, she's shy, and doesn't dare to impose herself. A few days later, he introduces her to her parents, they invite her to eat next Sunday. She dares not say no.
One morning, James appears, Priscilla loves him, he is pimply, she finds him so handsome. Alejandro goes crazy. He goes into crisis. James stole his girlfriend, she belongs to him.
Alejandro after a big mistake is sentenced to ten years in prison, to the great relief of the two lovers.
He gets out of prison.
A few days later, Priscilla realizes that in Laredo, life has stopped. No one saw, not even a dog or a bird, just the wind and the heat were present.
James is towards her, they are the only ones alive, the inhabitants did not flee, they died, at the same time, all the lives flew away. They supervise Laredo for any sign of life, none. They are waiting for help. America will realize that Laredo has a problem. Surely ten kilometers away, people live, love and breathe.
Laredo begins to smell of death, bodies are decomposing, insects are beginning to scurry everywhere. Leaving is the only solution. Texas couldn't die, Dallas, Houston are immortal cities.
A silhouette observes them.
