About the Book

The Steve Miller Band is a rock group formed during 1966 in San Francisco, California, led by Steve Miller on guitar and lead vocals. The band is best known for a string of mid- to late-'70s hit singles that are staples of classic rock radio, as well as several earlier psychedelic rock albums. Miller left his first group to move to San Francisco, where he formed the Steve Miller Blues Band. Shortly after Harvey Kornspan negotiated the group's contract with Capitol Records in 1967, they shortened the name to the Steve Miller Band. The group recorded their debut L.P., Children of the Future during February the following year, going on to produce albums including Sailor, Brave New World, Your Saving Grace, Number 5, Rock Love, Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams. The band's Greatest Hits 1974-78, issued in 1978, sold over 13 million copies. Miller was inducted as a solo artist into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during 2016.The Steve Miller Band has sold over 24 million L.Ps in the US. After moving to Chicago to play the blues in 1965, Steve Miller and keyboardist Barry Goldberg founded the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band along with bassist Roy Ruby, rhythm guitarist Craymore Stevens, and drummer Maurice McKinley. The group got a contract with Epic Records then recorded a single, The Mother Song, which they performed on Hullabaloo, before Steve left them to go to San Francisco. He then formed The Steve Miller Blues Band, Harvey Kornspan, managing partner, writing and negotiating the group's contract, worth $860,000 over 5 years as well as $25,000 of promotion money that was to be spent at the band's discretion with Capitol/EMI Records president Alan Livingston during 1967. Not long afterwards, the group's name was shortened to The Steve Miller Band to broaden its appeal. The group, comprising Steve, guitarist James Cooke, bassist Lonnie Turner, Tim Davis, who replaced the departing Lance Haas on drums and Jim Peterman on Hammond B3 organ, backed Chuck Berry at a gig at the Fillmore West that was released as the album, Live at Fillmore Auditorium. Guitarist Boz Scaggs joined the band soon afterwards before they performed at the Magic Mountain Festival on June 10th - 11th, 1967 then the following week at the Monterey Pop Festival, held from June 16th - 18th.
