About the Book

Though determining plastic modulus of section assuming the section to consist of rectangular parts are within the reach of a design engineer, but as Indian Rolled Steel Sections consist of sloping flanges, fillets at junctions and rounded edges are slightly complex. The authors have considered all the complexities in the shapes of Rolled Steel Sections and have determined Plastic Modulus of Steel Sections for I-beams, Channels, Tee-sections, Equal and Unequal Angle sections, I-beams with cover plates on both flanges and I-beams with Channel section on the upper compression flange (for Gantry Girders). Besides this buckling class of the sections in bending and axial compression are also provided. Useful information about properties of Indian Standard straps, strips and sheets are tabulated for ready reference for design engineers. The book also provides ready references of shear strength and tensile strength of Grade M4.6 bolts of different sizes and minimum end distances and pitches in their connections. Fillet weld strength per mm length are also given New in this Edition
In the present 2nd edition, missing headlines to a few columns are added and a figure is corrected. A column is added to tables so that the user can get the values of h1 as well as h2 straightaway. With minor corrections and additions the tables are made more user friendly.

At the end important formulae to be used in Working Stress Method and Limit State Method are provided. Contents: Rolled Steel Beams / Rolled Steel Channels / Rolled Steel Equal Angles / Rolled Steel Unequal Angles / Rolled Steel Tee-Sections / Rolled Steel Beam with additional plates on both flanges to be used as girders / Rolled Steel Beam with additional Channel on one side to be used as Gantry Girders / Mild Steel Flats / Mild Steel Strips / Mild Steel Sheets / Areas and perimeters of Round Bars / Shear Strength of Bolts of Grade 4.6 / Tensile Strength of Bolts of Grade 4.6 / Minimum End and Pitch Distances for Bolted Connections / Fillet Weld Strength per mm / Some important formulae for Working Stress Method of design / Some important formulae for Limit State Method of design.

About the Author

Dr. S.S. Bhavikatti studied at BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli for his BE (Civil) degree and graduated from Karnataka University, Dharwad in 1963 sharing first rank with another candidate. The same year he joined Karnataka Regional of Engineering College (presently NITK) Surathkal, as a teacher. He secured M.E. degree in Structural Engineering in 1967 from University of Roorkee, Roorkee (presently IIT Roorkee) under Technical Teachers Training Programme and Ph.D. degree in 1977 from IIT Delhi under Quality Improvement Programme. He served NITK in different capacities like Head of Civil Engineering Department, Chairman, Centre for Continuing Education, Chairman Central Computer Centre and Dean (Administration). From November 2001 to November 2005, he served at SDM College of Engineering and Technology, Dharwad. He then served RYMEC, Bellary as Principal upto September 2007. Presently he is working as Emeritus Professor at BVB College of Engineering and Technology. He has published 61 technical papers and 28 books. He has guided 68 students for M.Tech dissertation and 5 students for Ph.D. He was member of organizing / scientific committee of international seminars organized by IASS held at Taegue (South Korea) in 1990, Tokyo (Japan) in 1993 and Taipei (Taiwan) in 1997. He is member of several Indian and International professional bodies and several technical committees appointed by Government of Karnataka. K.V. Pramod completed B.E. Civil in the year 1986 from K.R.E.C. Surathkal (presently N.I.T.K. Surathkal), Mangalore University. He completed post graduation studies in Industrial Structures and obtained his M. Tech degree in the year 1988, also, from K.R.E.C. Surathkal, Mangalore University. He joined S.D.M. College of Engineering and Technology, Dharwad, Civil Engineering Department in 1988 as lecturer and is presently working as Professor, at the same Institution. He has handled several Structural subjects for both under graduate and post graduate classes and has been handling Steel Design and related subjects at both the levels for the past several years, even before the Limit State Design method for Steel Structures was introduced into the curriculum of Civil Engineering studies.
