Die Theorie von der neurogenen Entstehung bestimmter innerer Erkrankungen ist an sich alt. Beobachtungen am Krankenbett, Sektionstisch und Tier- experimente legten bereits vor tiber 100 J ahren die ersten exakteren Erfahrungen hierzu fest. Seither ist diese Frage fUr die Klinik nie mehr ganz aus dem Gesichts- kreis der Pathogenese innerer Erkrankungen geschwunden, wenngleich ihr in einzelnen Zeitlauften eine sehr verschiedene Bedeutung beigemessen wurde. Die Fortschritte der Organpathologie lie13en sie zeitweilig stark zuriicktreten. Gegen- wartig befinden wir uns - bezeichnenderweise gerade in Deutschland - in einer Phase der Entwicklung, wo diese Zusammenhange wieder im Brennpunkt des klinischen Interesses stehen. Wahrend die Untersuchungen und Lehren RICKERS und SPERANSKYS mehr die allgemeine Bedeutung des Nervensystems fUr die Ablaufe bestimmter biologischer Reaktionen in den Vordergrund stellten, ent- wickelte sich daneben auf eine jahrzehntelange Experimentalarbeit bezugnehmend eine klinische Lehre von der Neuralpathologie neuer Pragung, die neben diesen allgemeinen Gesichtspunkten die Prinzipien der Lokalisation und der Zentren- autonomie einschlie13t. In ihrer reinsten Pragung treffen wir sie in der VEIL-u. STuRMschen Theorie von der Diencephalose an. Ahnlich wie die motorischen, sensiblen und sensorischen Funktionen des N ervensystems werden hier die Leistungen des vegetativen Systems bestimmten zentralen, vor allem im Dience- phalon gelegenen Reprasentationsstellen - im Idealfall umschriebenen Zell- anhaufungen - zugeordnet und deren organische oder funktionelle Starung ursachlich fUr eine Reihe innerer Erkrankungen verantwortlich gemacht. Diese Zentren sollen als die iibergeordneten autonomen Regulatoren die periphere Organkrankheit in Gang setzen.
