In a town like this, you don't expect violence. It comes as a shock. Afterwards, everything seems changed, as if a storm moved through, with its lightning and thunder, leaving behind toppled trees and downed power lines.

In her Hill Street home, where her family's lived since colonial times, Cooper North-just retired as a prosecutor-sits in her living room, reading a book. Her new housemate, Henry, a Pembroke Welsh corgi, snoozes by her chair. She is silhouetted in a Palladian window.

Suddenly, the window shatters-a bullet.

Somebody wants her dead. Who, she doesn't know. Or why. She only knows that, in an old New England town like this, murder's roots can run deep.

She's always been the hunter, chasing down evil-doers, restoring decency to her town. Now, with the shattering of a window, it's she who's hunted.
