Der (vermeintliche) Alltag wird von der Kamera eingefangen und danach der breiten Öffentlichkeit zur Schau gestellt. Das millionenschwere Anwesen, die sündhaft teuren Familienkutschen und der verwöhnte Hund werden ins richtige Licht gerückt. Oftmals bekommen die Promis dann auch noch Besuch, meist von ebenfalls bekannten Personen, und das wird gefeiert - natürlich nur mit den edelsten Weinen und Magnum-Sektflaschen. Auf der anderen Seite werden Sendungen ausgestrahlt, die Menschen in misslichen Lagen zeigen. Die Mutter alleinerziehend, die Kinder nehmen Drogen, haben die Schule abgebrochen und werden schnell aggressiv. Die Wohnung ist verdreckt, die Kleidung schmutzig und die Umgangsformen innerhalb der Familie sind mehr als nur rau. So oder so ähnlich sehen die Requisiten und die Hauptfiguren in sogenannten "Trash-TV"-Sendungen aus. Nicht nur bei der Betrachtung dieser Sendungen klafft die gesellschaftliche Schere immer weiter auseinander, und die Ungleichheiten werden auch immer deutlicher sichtbar. Um den Begriff der sozialen Ungleichheit besser verstehen zu können, muss man schon in der Historie weit zurückgehen. In der Ständegesellschaft wurden die Menschen nach Grund und Boden und nach den Eltern eingeteilt. An der Spitze stand der König, es folgten der Klerus als erster Stand, der Adel als zweiter Stand und die Bauern und Bürger stellten den dritten Stand dar. Ein sozialer Aufstieg war fast unmöglich, ein Abstieg hingegen durchaus üblich. (vgl. Bosl 1987: 61-84) Bei der Klassengesellschaft gab es die Kategorien der Industriellen, der Arbeiterklasse und der Angestellten und Beamten. Eingeteilt wurde man aufgrund der Berufshierarchie und des Besitzes industrieller Produktionsmittel. Wiederum konnte man kaum einen soziale
