Die Neuerfindung der Grenze im 21. Jahrhundert Der kosmopolitische Traum von einer grenzenlosen Welt hat in den letzten Jahren tiefe Risse bekommen. Aber war er uberhaupt jemals realistisch? Steffen Mau zeigt, dass Grenzen im Zeitalter der Globalisierung von Anbeginn nicht offener gestaltet, sondern zu machtvollen Sortiermaschinen umgebaut wurden. Wahrend ein kleiner Kreis Privilegierter heute nahezu uberallhin reisen darf, bleibt die große Mehrheit der Weltbevolkerung weiterhin systematisch außen vor. Wahrend die Mobilitat von Menschen uber Grenzen hinweg in den letzten Jahrzehnten stetig zunahm und Grenzen immer offener schienen, fand gleichzeitig eine in Wissenschaft und Offentlichkeit unterschatzte Gegenentwicklung statt. Vielerorts ist es zu einer neuen Fortifizierung gekommen, zum Bau neuer abschreckender Mauern und militarisierter Grenzubergange. Grenzen wurden zudem immer selektiver und – unterstutzt durch die Digitalisierung – zu Smart Borders aufgerustet. Und die Grenzkontrolle hat sich raumlich massiv ausgedehnt, ja ist zu einer globalen Unternehmung geworden, die sich vom Territorium ablost. Der Soziologe Steffen Mau analysiert, auf welche Weise und mit welchen Mitteln die neuen Sortiermaschinen Mobilitat und Immobilitat zugleich schaffen: Fur erwunschte Reisende sollen sich Grenzen wie Kaufhausturen offnen, fur andere sollen sie fester denn je verschlossen bleiben. Zuletzt sind von ihm die Bucher "Das metrische Wir. Uber die Quantifizierung des Sozialen" (2017) und "Lutten Klein. Leben in der ostdeutschen Transformationsgesellschaft" (2019) erschienen. Er wurde 2021 mit dem Leibniz-Preis der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft ausgezeichnet.
