About the Book

A valued show dog, a Japanese Akita, arrives at a puppy breeding farm in Kansas. Her first action upon being released from her travel kennel is to viciously attack the man who freed her. What could explain this tragic circumstance? Can Johnny find a valid excuse for the beautiful dog's horrific action? Or is she doomed to suffer at the hands of mal-intentioned puppy mill operators? There are actually two stories intertwined in this novel. The human side is painfully realistic, full of adult emotions and questions concerning our moral responsibilities to those with whom we share this earth. The canine side uses a little bit of fantasy and a lot of action to explain the wondrous behaviour every dog owner ponders in his own pet, reinforcing what he or she knew all along: that their own best friend is truly 'Competent' to be a full partner in life.
About the Author: This is a first novel for Candice L. Martin, but its subject is one on which she has had a whole lifetime of experience: our canine companions. Ms. Martin has worked with dogs, cats and horses (with a smattering of birds and fish) most of her life. Her first job started as kennel help for a veterinarian, then small animal groomer and, finally, veterinary technician. For over 40 years, Candice has been involved with breeding and training Shih Tzu for the show ring, at the same time owning many other breeds and mongrels for the sheer pleasure they gave her. Growing up on the dog stories of Albert Payson Terhune (Lad, A Dog), Jack London (White Fang, Call of the Wild), Eleanor Atkinson (Greyfriar's Bobby) and, of course, Eric Knight (Lassie Come Home), she always had the desire to create a new novel for the dog-loving public. The number of people who call themselves dog-lovers today has grown mightily worldwide since the times of those early 20th century writers, and yet there are very few serious works of fiction written specifically for them. "I hope you find SOLITAIRE, A Dog Story to be an intellectually and emotionally-satisfying novel that will not only entertain you, but will also help you to make good choices concerning that next new dog in your life - or the old one that may need just a little more understanding." - Candice L. Martin
