Bereits das Zentrum Babylons 2000 Jahre v. Chr. war nur für Könige und Priester zugänglich, aber auch die mitteleuropäischen Städte des Mittelalters waren so gegliedert, dass sich die Bevölkerung der jeweiligen Viertel nach Beruf und sozialem Stand unterschied (Häußermann/Siebel 2004:146). Auch im Italien der Renaissance gab es starke Ausprägungen der Segregation. So ist der Ursprung des Begriffes Ghetto in dem Namen eines Quartiers in Venedig zu sehen, in dem das Wohnrecht dahingehend reglementiert wurde, dass die jüdische Gemeinde in einem Stadtviertel zusammengefasst wurde. Und auch in asiatischen Städten und in Indien ist es noch immer üblich, dass der Wohnort an die Religion bzw. an die Zugehörigkeit zu einer Kastegeknüpft ist (Häußermann/Siebel 2004:146). Aktuell zählt die Segregationsforschung zu den wichtigsten Fragestellungen der Stadtsoziologie und -geographie. Den Einstieg in das Thema stellt die Definition des Begriffs Segregation und die Vorstellung von zwei geläufigen Segregationsindizes dar. Anschließend wird im Hauptteil der Arbeit auf die Segregationsformen ethnischer Gruppen eingegangen, indem vorab geklärt wird in welchem Sinne ethnisch zu verstehen ist, um darauf aufbauend die wichtigsten ethnischen Minderheiten in den USA vorzustellen. Das Kernstück der Arbeit bildet die nachfolgende Ausarbeitung der Ursachen für die Segregation ethnischer Gruppen, wobei die Ursachen in erzwungen - also strukturell bedingt - und freiwillig unterschieden werden. Basierend auf diesen Ausführungen werden zuerst die allgemeinen räumlichen Ausprägungen der Segregation erläutert,
