Mit diesem, für sein Buch "Wir amüsieren uns zu Tode" beispielhaften Zitat, übt Neil Postman 1985 an den Inhalten eines Mediums Kritik, das zu dieser Zeit bereits seit über zwei Jahrzehnten das Alltags-, Familien- und Sozialleben der Menschen dominierte. Er beschäftigt sich in seinem Standardwerk der Fernsehkritik nicht nur mit den Auswirkungen des Fernsehens auf den Konsum anderer Medien wie Buch oder Zeitung, sondern auch mit den Folgen der allgegenwärtigen Vorherrschaft der Bilder für die Kultur, die Gesellschaft und deren Auffassung von Wahrheit. Insgesamt zeichnet der Autor ein eher ernüchterndes Bild eines Mediums, das die meisten Nutzer ohne große Hintergedanken oder gar Bedenken nutzen. Er beschreibt wie durch das Fernsehen, Informationen aus ihren Zusammenhängen gerissen werden und ein "unstillbarer Hunger nach Aufklärung und Entwicklung [entsteht], der wiederum mit leichter Kost gestillt werden muss. Das Ergebnis: Der Mensch verhungert langfristig an geistiger Magersucht" (Breitenbach 2008: 149). Man amüsiert sich also zu Tode.
