"Klöster, Kuppeln und der Glanz der Zarenzeit" lautete das Leitmotiv einer Flusskreuzfahrt durch den Westen Russlands, die von Moskau über Flüsse, Kanäle und Seen vorbei an kleineren Städten und Dörfern im weiten Bogen nach St. Petersburg führte. Die Reise begann in der Neuzeit - auf dem internationalen Flughafen von Domodedowo, dessen bauchig-futuristische Glasarchitektur jenseits aller Vorstellungen eines inzwischen auch von der Moderne beleckten Russlands liegt. Gleiches gilt für die Wolkenkratzer von Moskau City, die im Kontrast zu den einstigen und heutigen Zentren der Macht stehen - den Bauten des mächtigen Kremls, dem riesigen Roten Platz und den Türmen im Zuckerbäckerstil aus der Sowjetzeit. Unterwegs schildert der Autor das Schicksal des Zarewitschs Dimitri in Uglitsch, seine Eindrücke von der alten russischen Handelsstadt Jaroslawl am Goldenen Ring und Gedanken zu der "Mütterchen Russland" genannten Wolga - dem größten Strom Europas. Beobachtungen eindrucksvoller Landschaften wechseln mit Berichten über faszinierende Bauwerke in geschichtsträchtigen Orten und Begegnungen in den Städtchen Gorizy und Kirillow. Die Weite Kareliens beeindruckt ebenso wie das einfache Leben der Menschen auf der fernen Insel Kishi im Omegasee, wo sie in der Einsamkeit des Nordens das Kishi Pogost genannte Kirchenensemble schufen - ein filigranes und in der Welt einmaliges Kunstwerk. Die Reise endete in der Welt Peters des Großen. Dieser prägte Russland wie kein anderer Zar. In dem von ihm gegründeten St. Petersburg herrscht Aufbruchstimmung. Die Metropole an der Mündung der Newa in die Ostsee zeigt sich lebendig und aufgeschlossen mit einer Mischung aus altem Charme und neuem Lifestyle. Seine Aufgaben als auch seine Leidenschaft zum Reisen führten ihn mehrfach durch Europa und um die ganze Welt.
