Dies bewegte Philosophen und Wissenschaftler bereits seit den frühesten Menschenzeitaltern dazu, sich i. R. ihrer Entscheidungsfindung mit dem Phänomen der Ungewissheit zu befassen. Nichtsdestotrotz erhielt die Auseinandersetzung mit der Ungewissheit erst Anfang der Zwanzigerjahre des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts Einzug in die ökonomische Theorie. Nur wenige Jahre zuvor wurde jene von der Neoklassischen Wirtschaftstheorie im Zusammenhang mit der übersimplifizierenden Annahme des sog. homunculus oeconomicus neoclassicus noch vollständig und ignorant ausgeblendet und damit ein Stabilität garantierendes, risikofreies System unterstellt. Die Wegbereiter des modernen ökonomischen Ansatzes hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit der Ungewissheit sind in den Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern Frank Knight und John Maynard Keynes zu identifizieren. Die ihrerseits geleistete definitorische und konzeptionelle Auseinandersetzung mit den bestimmten Graden von Ungewissheit gilt bis in die gegenwärtige Zeit als bestimmende Forschungsgrundlage. Gestützt von den katastrophalen Auswirkungen des Ersten Weltkriegs erwiesen sich sowohl Knight als auch Keynes als Antagonisten der Vorstellung einer universellen Anwendbarkeit des Messens, welche etwa im Viktorianischen Zeitalter von William Stanley Jevons enthusiastisch proklamiert wurde. Das aus der Vergangenheit gesammelte Erfahrungswissen und daraus abgeleitete Wahrscheinlichkeitsüberlegungen sollen in der modernen ökonomischen Theorie nicht grds. ausreichend sei
