Die Adaption Terry Johnsons von Freuds Begegnung mit Salvador Dalí steht auf dem Fundament der wohl recherchierten historischen Wirklichkeit um Sigmund Freuds Lebenswerk und seiner letzten Jahre in London Hampstead. London, genauer gesagt Freuds Arbeitszimmer in 20 Maresfield Gardens ist auch der Ort des Geschehens. Das Stück wechselt in seinem Verlauf immer wieder von 'geschichtsgetreuer Darstellung zu surrealistischen Szenarien' (Wald 2007, 76). So ist das Bühnenbild eine exakte Repräsentation seines Arbeitszimmers (Johnson, Hysteria, 0). Auch die abenteuerlich erscheinende Begegnung mit dem surrealistischen Maler Salvador Dalí, welche tatsächlich stattgefunden hat und das Auftreten anderer historischer Personen wie Freuds Tochter Anna Freud und dem Arzt Abraham Yahuda tragen zum realistischen Charakter des Stückes bei. Lediglich die junge Frau, Jessica, welche Freud nicht nur beinahe zur Verzweiflung bringt, ist eine rein fiktive Figur. Es stellt sich jedoch heraus, dass sie die Tochter einer tatsächlichen, ehemaligen Patientin Freuds ist, deren Fallgeschichte er zuvor veröffentlicht hat. Der eigentliche Name der Patientin war Miriam Stein, die aber in Freuds Veröffentlichung Rebecca S. genannt wurde (Wald 2007, 76), um sie vor öffentlicher Bloßstellung zu schützen. Jessica konfrontiert Freud mit den Aufzeichnungen die ihre Mutter, Miriam Stein, während sie von Freud therapiert wurde anfertigte und wirft ihm vor, sie als erfolgreiche Fallgeschichte vermarktet zu haben, obwohl sie sich später in einem 'Irrenhaus nahe Paris' (Johnson, Hysteria, 51) das Leben nahm: "Rebecca S. has little in common with Miriam Stein.
