Der Glaube an die Unerschopflichkeit der Meeresressourcen war noch in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts so unerschutterlich, dass selbst Fischereiexperten Heringe mit Insekten verglichen - Ausrottung praktisch unmoglich. Jens Ruppenthal untersucht den langwierigen Abschied von dieser vermeintlichen Gewissheit zwischen ca. 1950 und 2000 und analysiert dabei die wissenschaftliche ebenso wie die offentliche Debatte in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Ein zahlebiges Vertrauen in technische Machbarkeit bewirkte, dass sich die heute so prasente Vorstellung von der Verwundbarkeit der Meere als Okosysteme nur allmahlich durchsetzen konnte. Ruppenthal leistet damit einen kulturhistorisch angelegten Beitrag zur Etablierung einer Umweltgeschichte der Meere und zur Diskussion um das Anthropozan. Anhand bisher kaum berucksichtigter Quellen ordnet er am Beispiel der Hochseefischerei und des geplanten Meeresbergbaus zwei spezielle schifffahrts- und technikhistorische Themen in einen weiteren geschichtswissenschaftlichen Kontext ein und bietet so auch einen Zugang zur Maritime History.


About the Author: Jens Ruppenthal ist Historiker und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Deutschen Schifffahrtsmuseum / Leibniz-Institut fur Maritime Geschichte in Bremerhaven. Schwerpunkt seiner Tatigkeit als wissenschaftlicher Koordinator im Ausstellungsbereich "Schifffahrt und Umwelt" ist die Umweltgeschichte der Schifffahrt und der Meere in der Spaten Neuzeit. Seine weiteren Forschungsinteressen gelten der Erinnerungskultur und der europaischen Kolonialgeschichte.
