About the Book

Avant-propos. Au cours de sa longue vie (1830-1914), Frédéric Mistral a fait éditer seulement ses grandes oeuvres: Mireille (1859) Calendal (1867), Les Îles d'or, édition originale (1876), édition refondue (1889), Nerte (1884), La Reine Jeanne (1890), Le Poème du Rhône (1897) ou Les Olivades (1912). De 1880 à 1886, il donnait, en outre, par livraisons successives, son grand dictionnaire provençal français, Le Trésor du Félibrige. Les grands poèmes de Mistral sont universellement connus. Pourtant, ce que l'on connait moins du félibre provençal, ce sont ses multiples écrits pour L'Armana Prouvençau, premier organe du groupe des jeunes poètes provençaux qui fondèrent le Félibrige, le 21 mai 1854, au castelet de Font-Ségugne, non loin d'Avignon. Roumanille et Mistral en assurèrent très vite le succès. Le tirage en monta rapidement de 500 à 10 000 exemplaires, et, à partir de l'année 1860, cette publication, faite d'abord exclusivement pour la Provence et le Comtat, pouvait s'adresser fièrement à tout le peuple du Midi . Roumanille et Mistral y partagèrent le pseudonyme de Cascarelet. La Prose d'Almanach de Mistral est une merveille de justesse et de pittoresque sobre; elle saisit sur le vif le langage même du peuple, le magnifie, en illustre les idiotismes et les tournures propres. Le poète applique à la transcription du conte et de la sornette, la méthode géniale qui lui sert à revivifier la chanson populaire: après qu'il les a maniés, contes et chansons deviennent des types essentiels, expriment de façon définitive les élans et les aspirations, les tristesses et les joies de l'âme populaire provençale.
About the Author: Frédéric Mistral (Frederi) (1830-1914) est un écrivain et un lexicographe français de langue provençale (occitane). Mistral fut membre fondateur du Félibrige, membre de l'Académie de Marseille. Après avoir passé son baccalauréat à Nîmes, il étudie le droit à Aix-en-Provence de 1848 à 1851, et se fait alors le chantre de l'indépendance de la Provence et surtout du provençal première langue littéraire de l'Europe civilisée . Son oeuvre capitale est "Mireille", publiée en 1859 après huit ans d'effort créateur. Mistral reçoit le Prix Nobel de littérature en 1904 conjointement avec José Echegaray. Il consacrera le montant de ce prix à la création du Museon Arlaten à Arles.
