Groß geworden in einer von den Wirren des 30-jährigen Krieges erschütterten brandenburgischen Mark, schaffte er es ohne staatsmännische Erziehung durch seinen Vater, das Hause Brandenburg wirtschaftlich und militärisch zu reformieren. Der Große Kurfürst kümmerte sich immer selbst um die Regierungsgeschäfte, arbeitet intensiv an einer Vergrößerung seiner Besitztümer. Es stellt sich allein die Frage, wieso er bei der Vererbung seiner Besitztümer an jeden seiner noch lebenden Söhne einen Teil der Kurlande verteilt hat. Seit der Goldenen Bulle von Karl IV. galt es als kurfürstliche Regel dem Erstgeborenen all seine Besitzungen zu vermachen und die Kurfürstlichen Lande nicht aufzuteilen. Diese Reichsgesetze der Unteilbarkeit und der Primogenitur wurden von dem Großen Kurfürsten missachtet, was zur Folge den Verlust des Kurfürstentitels haben müsste, hätte nicht sein ältester Sohn Friedrich die Annullierung des Testamentes erwirkt. Es wird betrachtet, ob der Große Kurfürst eine Ausnahme in seiner Ahnenreihe war oder er nur eine Tradition fortführte. Dazu wird zu Beginn der Arbeit der Grundsatz der Unteilbarkeit und Primogenitur im Hause Brandenburg nachgegangen und analysiert, welche Hausgesetze galten im kurfürstlichen Umfeld. Danach werden die beiden direkten Vorgänger des Großen Kurfürsten Johann Sigismund und Georg Wilhelm betrachtet. Nach einer biographischen Einleitung wird ein Einblick in die Familienverhältnisse und eventuellen Besonderheiten der Erbfolge gelegt, um genau zu erkennen, welche Kenntnisse der Große Kurfürst von seinen beiden direkten Vorfahren erhalten hat. Darauf wird des Kurfürsten eigene Biographie durchleuchtet, sein Konflikt mit dem geraischen Hausvertrag aufgezeichnet und versuc
