In Preußentum und Sozialismus reflektiert Oswald Spengler über das Verhältnis zwischen Sozialismus, Liberalismus und dem, was er Preußentum nennt. Er verwendet diesen Begriff in einem weiteren Sinn und nicht nur, um das zu beschreiben, was an Preußen als bestimmtes Gebiet oder Staatsgebilde geknüpft ist. Preußentum ist für Spengler eine typisch deutsche, angeborene Veranlagung, die in Eigenschaften wie Pflichtgefühl und Bereitschaft sich für das Gemeinwohl zu opfern, zum Ausdruck kommt. Im Gegensatz zum Marxismus, den er stark kritisiert, ist dieser preußische Geist für Spengler synonym mit wahrem Sozialismus: Altpreußischer Geist und sozialistische Gesinnung, die sich heute mit dem Hasse von Brüdern hassen, sind ein und dasselbe. Spengler stellt in Preußentum und Sozialismus zwei fundamental unterschiedliche Lebensanschauungen einander gegenüber: den englischen Liberalismus und den preußischen Sozialismus. Während der englische Liberalismus durch entschiedenen Individualismus und rücksichtslose Gewinnsucht geprägt sei, betone der preußische Sozialismus Zusammengehörigkeit, Solidarität und Volksgemeinschaft. Beide Sichtweisen seien unvereinbar, und eine Koexistenz könne es nicht geben. Je nachdem, welche Ideologie die Oberhand bekommt, werde die Macht letztlich entweder bei Finanzinteressen oder bei Staaten ruhen. Vor diesem Hintergrund fordert Spengler die Bürger aller Gesellschaftsschichten auf, sich über den Klassenegoismus hinwegzusetzen, den preußischen Sozialismus zu bejahen und sich im Kampf gegen die liberale Weltanschauung - das innere England - zu vereinigen, die er als eine Bedrohung des Fortbestands der Nation betrachtet. Oswald Spengler (1880-1936), deutscher Historiker und Philosoph, ist vor allem für seine Theorie bekannt, wonach Zivilisationen sich nicht linear, sondern zyklisch entwickeln: sie werden geboren, blühen auf und sterben auf eine Weise, die an lebendige Wesen erinnert. Er entfaltete diese These in seinem Hauptwerk Der Untergang des Abendlandes, das in zwei Bänden 1918 beziehungsweise 1922 erschien.
