El tema que se aborda es el mal en el ser humano. Nos preguntamos, ¿cómo es posible el mal en el ser humano? Nuestra hipótesis es la siguiente: el mal en el ser humano es posible por su constitución ontológica, que implica apertura, recepción y pasividad, y por obra del ser humano.
El presente estudio toma en cuenta la obra de Ricoeur en su último periodo, es decir, comprende los trabajos en los que formula la idea del hombre capaz. El trabajo no recoge las ideas acerca del mal que el autor desarrolló en sus obras anteriores al periodo ya mencionado, aunque encontramos repetidas referencias de los temas que trató en aquellos trabajos. Esta delimitación de nuestro campo de estudio se justifica por varios cambios importantes en su pensamiento.
Uno de los cambios más importantes tiene que ver con la concepción del símbolo y derivadamente del mito. En Finitud y culpabilidad, Ricoeur toma el símbolo como una estructura de doble sentido (Ricoeur, 2007 A, pág. 33), uno explícito y otro implícito. En sus últimas obras, el símbolo pasa a un nivel secundario en los intereses del autor, quien se enfoca en la temática de la narratividad (Ricoeur, 2007 A, págs. 50, 61, 63), en la que se juega la refiguración del mundo en el texto y en la recepción del lector o espectador. El mito, con el símbolo y otras figuras retóricas como recurso de la explicación del mal en el ser humano, son ubicadas en la temática de la narración o relato, cuyas funciones están estudiadas con mayor amplitud en una época posterior del pensamiento de nuestro filósofo.
En segundo lugar, Ricoeur articula de forma satisfactoria una hermenéutica fenomenológica. La renuncia a la inmediatez de la conciencia y de su autoposición es un rasgo plenamente desarrollado en la última etapa de pensamiento de Ricoeur, si bien nunca estuvo de acuerdo con tal inmediatez. En la hermenéutica del sí que propone nuestro autor, para dar cuenta del "yo" es necesario el rodeo mediante el análisis de las objetivaciones en las cuales el "yo" se reconoce y se designa a "sí mismo", lo que tiene como fin suprimir todo rastro de conciencia primera e inmediata de sí para un ser que necesita interpretarse en sus obras a fin de tener significado para él mismo: el sujeto no se conoce a sí mismo inmediatamente, sino que tiene que mediar entre el otro y la cultura (Ricoeur, 2006 B, pág. XXXI). La carencia de un fundamento en sentido fuerte, garante del sí y de su existencia, conduce al tercer cambio.
Un tercer cambio se presenta con el desarrollo de la idea del hombre capaz: el hombre sufriente plantea la temática, inédita en su obra, de la alteridad como tal. La temática de la alteridad complementa la concepción del ser humano: un ser no solamente actuante, sino también pasivo, abriendo la posibilidad para hablar de un ser humano también sufriente.
