Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Philosophie - Philosophie der Antike, Note: 1,7, Freie Universität Berlin (Institut für Philosophie), Veranstaltung: Platons Sophistes, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In seinem Dialog 'Sophistes' sucht Platon die offensive Auseinandersetzung mit der zeitgenössischen Zunft der Sophisten. Die Sophisten waren Wanderlehrer, die im damaligen Griechenland von Stadt zu Stadt zogen und den Menschen ihre Weisheit und Wortfertigkeit gegen Bezahlung feilboten. Sie waren die Spin-Doctors ihrer Zeit und Relativität war ihr Metier: sie konnten mit Hilfe ihrer rhetorischen Fähigkeiten und moralischen Ungebundenheit eine gute Sache schlecht reden und eine schlechte gut. Vielen ihrer Zeitgenossen erschienen sie wie Chamäleone, an denen sich die Geister der Leute schieden: "Diese Männer produzieren sich vor der unwissenden Menge 'in vielerlei Gestalt', wenn sie 'die Städte durchstreifen' und als echte und nicht nur vorgebliche Philosophen ganz von oben auf das Leben der Menschen unten in den Niederungen hinabschauen. Manchem scheinen sie als reine Nichtsnutze, anderen höchster Ehren wert zu sein; manchmal treten sie als Politiker auf, manchmal als Sophisten...". Derartig vielseitig veranlagt und tätig waren die Sophisten also schwierige Patienten, deren Enttarnung als Meister der Worthülse nicht ohne größere Anstrengungen zu bewerkstelligen war. Wohl aus diesem Grund hat Platon im 'Sophistes' seine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phänomen des Sophismus ungewöhnlich breit und systematisch angelegt. Er nähert sich dem Thema auf zwei Wegen, nämlich zum einen mit einer begrifflichen Bestimmung der Person des Sophisten am Anfang und dann wieder am Ende des Dialogs und zum anderen mit einer Auseinandersetzung mit der sophistischen Lehre selbst, die in den Zwischenabschnitten erfolgt.
