About the Book

Pig Tales follows a young man's career from his stint as a Berkeley police officer in the 70s to his time as an undercover narcotic detective in a rural county in California's Central Valley. It examines the war on drugs from a different point of view and explores the personal lives of narcs as well as how cases are really made. The wild adventures of this undercover cop are relayed in humorous, and sometimes moving, stories that bring the cops, crooks, and informants to life during a time when police work was far less regulated. The characters involved on both sides of the law were colorful and sometimes outrageous. While Pig Tales recounts terrifying moments on the job, its style offers an entertaining and irreverent snapshot of what really goes on and isn't often talked about in law enforcement.Readers will come face to face with these rich characters and the life and politics of the law enforcement profession in a way that is seldom done.
About the Author: Dale Hoagland is the grandson of a deputy sheriff who led his family to California's Central Valley during the Dust Bowl. He was lucky enough to have had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement. Starting at age nineteen he worked as a correctional officer among hardened criminals in the prisons of Tuolumne County, before joining the Berkeley Police Department. As a rural valley kid working as a Berkeley rookie in the early 70s, he found himself chasing Black Panthers, fighting on riot lines and learning how to survive in a big city. He later became a narcotics officer in the rural communities of the Central Valley, where he joined a group of fellow narcs who experienced the drug wars of the 1970s from undercover and often from outside the lines of institutional authority. Hoagland has an AA, BA, and MA in Police Science, Sociology and Criminology and has been a prison guard, police officer, deputy sheriff, state agent, and federal agent. His assignments have included narcotics, swat, hostage negotiations, range master, defensive tactics instructor, and detective. He held the rank of narcotic team leader, sergeant, and lieutenant as well as police academy director. He's a life time member of California Narcotics Officer Association and currently teaching in a law enforcement program.
