Faisant suite a la publication des huit premiers volumes de la Correspondance de Petrarque, l'Africa est l'epopee (inachevee comme l'Eneide), en hexametres latins et en neuf chants, qui valut au jeune Petrarque de recevoir le laurier poetique sur le Capitole en 1341.De ce grand poeme d'amour et de gloire, comme seront plus tard le Roland Furieux et la Jerusalem delivree, la trame est historique, l'action prise au moment de l'affrontement decisif sur sol africain entre Rome et Carthage, representees par deux geants, Scipion et Hannibal. Le heros principal, un jeune puritain, modele de vaillance, de clemence, de chastete, sorte de Perceval ou Galaad romain, passionne de vertu, incarne l'ideal humain qui nourrira longtemps le reve humaniste.Et pourtant ce poeme destine a exalter la figure du chef charismatique s'ouvre sur une radicale denonciation de la gloire terrestre: au terme d'une journee victorieuse, le jeune chef s'endort, l'ombre de son pere lui apparait et l'entraine sur les hauteurs de la Voie lactee d'ou il contemple la petitesse derisoire du theatre des actions humaines et la vanite de ce que nous appelons la vie et qui n'est que la mort de l'ame dans la prison du corps. La fresque historique s'ouvre sur ce porche philosophique grandiose.Autre enrichissement: dans la source livienne, Petrarque a releve un episode merveilleusement accorde a son genie: c'est le recit des amours malheureuses du roi numide, Massinissa, allie de Rome, et de Sophonisbe, la fille d'Hasdrubal. Ce recit, equivalent de l'episode de Didon et Enee dans l'Eneide, illumine tout le livre V, centre poetique du poeme. Petrarque y deploie et tout son art et sa profonde connaissance des delices et des tourments de l'ame amoureuse.Ainsi commence le poeme, nourri de ces tensions, soutenu par une vers d'une rare musicalite, dont la traduction versifiee de Pierre Laurens a tente de donner une idee. Le texte donne ici s'appuie pour la premiere fois sur le manuscrit temoin du dernier etat de l'oeuvre et enrichi dans les marges des ultimes corrections du poete ainsi que des suggestions de son disciple Coluccio Salutati.
