En abril de 1965, el Che Guevara se marcha de La Habana al Congo para dirigir a 200 veteranos cubanos que asisten al movimiento de liberación africana contra los colonialistas belgas, cuatro años después del asesinato del presidente socialista democráticamente electo, Patrice Lumumba.

About the Author: Ernesto Che Guevara es profundamente radicalizado cuando, como un joven doctor atravesando América Latina por segunda vez, un viaje que luego describe en Diarios Latinoamericanos, presencia, primero la Revolución Boliviana, y luego, en Guatemala, el derrocamiento del gobierno democráticamente electo de Jacobo Árbenz por las fuerzas respaldadas por Estados Unidos. Luego de escapar a México, Guevara se reúne con un grupo de revolucionarios cubanos exiliados en Ciudad de México encabezados por Fidel Castro e inmediatamente se enlista en la expedición planeada para derrocar al dictador cubano Fulgencio Batista. Los cubanos le ponen el sobrenombre Che, una forma popular de dirigirse en su Argentina nativa. El grupo zarpa a Cuba el 25 de noviembre de 1956 a bordo del velero Granma, con el Che como el doctor del grupo. Dentro de pocos meses, Fidel lo designa comandante del Ejército Rebelde, aunque continúa atendiendo a los guerrilleros heridos y los soldados capturados de Batista.
El General Batista huye de Cuba el 1 de enero de 1959, luego de eso el Che se vuelve uno los líderes principales del nuevo gobierno revolucionario. También es el representante más importante de la Revolución Cubano en una escala internacional, encabezando numerosas delegaciones y ganándose la reputación de ser un apasionado y elocuente portavoz para la gente del Tercer Mundo. En abril de 1956, el Che se va de Cuba para dirigir una misión guerrillera de 200 soldados cubanos para apoyar la lucha revolucionaria en el Congo, una misión que relata en Pasajes de la Guerra Revolucionaria: Congo. El libro se caracteriza por la brutal y disciplinada honestidad del Che, mientras relata la secuencia de fracasos y callejones sin salida que caracterizaron esa misión, analizando cada una, y sin embargo nunca perdiendo de vista su optimismo innato y la claridad de su misión. Después de volver a Cuba en diciembre de 1965, el Che prepara otra fuerza guerrillera, está vez a Bolivia, adonde llega en noviembre de 1966 con una pequeña fuerza guerrillera, con la intención de desafiar a la dictadura militar del país. Lo captura la fuerza contrainsurgente entrenada por los Estados Unidos en octubre de 1967, y los asesinan a sangre fría el día siguiente. Sus diarios de Bolivia fueron editados y publicados bajo el título El Diario del Che en Bolivia.
