About the Book

The most prevalent birth defect, congenital heart disease (CHD), is the major cause of death in newborns and young children.
A baby with CHD is born every 500 births, and their mortality rate is higher than that of any other group of children's.

A mix of genetic and environmental factors contributes to CHD.
A genetic mutation that can cause CHD is present in around half of all newborns with the condition.
The risk of cardiac abnormalities can also be increased by maternal smoking, low birth weight, and early delivery.

Although there isn't one "cause" for CHD, understanding its causes is crucial for creating prevention methods.

There is no single "solution" to CHD, although early diagnosis and treatment are essential for the baby's and the family's health.

The American Heart Association (AHA) is striving to identify CHD's underlying causes and develop strategies for preventing it.
The AHA is also aiming to enhance CHD patients' care and treatment.

To assist you in learning more about CHD and how to prevent the illness, the AHA has created a variety of resources.
Congenital cardiac disease: what is it?
When the heart does not form properly in the womb, congenital heart disease-a collection of disorders-occurs.
It affects around 1 in 500 newborns and is the most prevalent birth defect in the country.
Congenital heart disease comes in many distinct forms, and each one is brought on by a unique issue with the heart's growth.
First- and second-degree heart blocks, ventricular septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, and congenital heart failure are a few of the most prevalent varieties of congenital heart disease.

The heart functions as a pump to enhance the body's blood circulation.
Each of its four chambers, which are the left ventricle, right ventricle, atria, and ventricles, houses a muscle.
The major function of the heart is to pump blood around the body.

The heart works optimally when blood is flowing continuously.
Symptoms can appear when something obstructs the heart's ability to pump blood.
Heart attacks are the most typical disruption of the heart's normal rhythm.
A heart attack is characterized by an abrupt, excruciating pain in the chest that results from possible damage to the heart muscle.
