La campagna culminata con la battaglia di Novara del 23 marzo 1849, oggi quasi del tutto dimenticata come tutto ciò che riguarda il Risorgimento italiano, pose fine agli avvenimenti militari della Prima Guerra d'Indipendenza dopo solo tre giorni del riaccendersi delle ostilità tra Austria e Regno di Sardegna, iniziate con la rottura dell'Armistizio firmato dopo Custoza.

Il 20 marzo l'esercito sabaudo aveva varcato il Ticino a Boffalora, avanzando fino a Magenta, con l'obiettivo di strappare agli austriaci una Milano dalla quale ci si attendeva una nuova insurrezione. Ma il giorno dopo i sardi vennero travolti dalla controffensiva asburgica e furono sconfitti a Mortara, dove gli austriaci fecero 2000 prigionieri. Quello che la mattina del 23 marzo affrontò le truppe di Radetzky nei dintorni di Novara, era un esercito cresciuto troppo in fretta nei mesi precedenti, mal finanziato, scarso di quadri e dotato di pessimi servizi logistici. Lo comandava un generale polacco, Chrzanowski, che conosceva poco il Paese e quasi per nulla la sua lingua, con i soldati che si sentivano demotivati, e trascinati in guerra dalla pressione congiunta della Camera dei deputati e di Carlo Alberto, ansioso di riscattare la sconfitta di Custoza.

Per il Generalfeldmarschall Joseph Radetzky von Radetz fu una vittoria folgorante, malgrado il valore veramente strenuo dei soldati piemontesi, cui fece riscontro la straordinaria incapacità dei comandanti.

La battaglia costò più di 5.000 uomini per parte tra morti, feriti, prigionieri e dispersi. L'entità e l'equivalersi delle perdite stanno ad indicare l'intensità e l'incertezza dei combattimenti.

La battaglia di Novara rappresentò il momento del trionfo apparente di quella riscossa assolutista in Italia che nel giro di pochi mesi spense gli ultimi fuochi delle rivoluzioni divampate un anno prima nella penisola.

Completa il lavoro il testo del rapporto ufficiale del Maresciallo Radetzky, che offre una visione dettagliata degli eventi visti dalla parte del vincitore.

L'opera è impreziosita dal vasto corredo iconografico e cartografico e da un appendice uniformologica con le divise delle truppe di Radetzky nelle tavole di Rudolf von Ottenfeld.
