Depois da publicação e aclamação, em terras canadianas, de The Scent of a Lie - livro de contos premiado internacionalmente -, o escritor luso-canadiano paulo da costa estreia-se na língua de Camões com o livro de poesia Notas de Rodapé. notas de rodapé tem na diversidade temática uma das suas características mais fortemente identitárias. Da reinterpretação mitológica patente no poema "édipo antes de édipo?" ao poema de pendor autobiográfico "gelo canadiano", das paisagens intimistas de "tão longe, tão perto" à crítica de costumes de "peregrinação", da composição quase cinematográfica da sequência dos três poemas que compõem "lua rainbow" à brevidade sentenciosa e auto-reflexiva de poemas como "primeira impressão", o universo poético de paulo da costa parece deslocar-se permanentemente por entre um sem número de impressões onde poderemos ver, se assim o entendermos e soubermos, um igual sem número de notas de rodapé em relação a esse grande e indecifrável texto que é a vida. O pragmatismo na abordagem ao texto poético é, aliás, uma das atitudes mais marcantes que nos apresenta paulo da costa: a metáfora (figura de estilo tão cara à arte poética) é desenvolta, atingindo em certos poemas uma poderosa exuberância imagística que sabe evitar com mestria a tentação de ser um fim em si mesma; a evolução de cada poema encontra-se perfeitamente delineada, sendo a matéria que o enforma elástica, alquímica; há o primado do que se intentou transmitir, mas tudo no texto se combina de forma a que cada poema nos olhe com uma multiplicidade de rostos. Isto, por si só, evidencia que os vinte e dois poemas que compõem Notas de Rodapé passaram pelo duro processo a que toda a criação poética deve ser submetida: o crivo do tempo, o rigor conceptual e o repouso para maturação. Mas não é só. O poema, em paulo da costa, surge como um todo articulado. Depois do impulso criador, o leitor sente que os versos que dão corpo a cada poema foram progressivamente retomados, feridos, trabalhados, depurados de forma a dotarem a palavra de dois dos seus mais poderosos argumentos: transfiguração e superação. Digamos que o poeta escreve para se libertar de uma impressão, de um pensamento, de uma emoção; digamos que o poeta escreve para se libertar do próprio poema o mais cuidadosa e minuciosamente possível. Digamos que o faz exibindo o poema como um cristal polido por onde a luz passa e se difunde.
