Residenzschloss. Gartenkunst, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In der Nacht vom 29. zum 30. April 1945 stand das Schloss Neustrelitz so lichterloh in Brand, dass das Feuer im Umkreis mehrerer Kilometer sichtbar gewesen sein soll. Zwar war das Löschen wohl aussichtslos, doch sind sich Fachleute heute auch einig, dass der Zustand des Schlosses nicht irreparabel gewesen wäre. Nach dem Brand wurde die Ruine dann den Quellen nach von Deutschen und Russen beiderseits geplündert. Ausgelagerte Sammlungsbestände des Schlossmuseums, wurden in alle Winde zerstreut und die Ausstellungsstücke, die den Brand im Keller überlebt hatten und in die Städtischen Werke verbracht wurden, verschwanden und konnten bis heute nicht aufgefunden werden. Der endgültige Todesstoß für die Ruine [Abb. 1] kam dann im Oktober 1949, als man die Sprengung der Reste beschloss, um die Steine bei dem Bau der neuen Poliklinik in Neustrelitz zu nutzen. Immerhin drei Sprengungen am 24. Oktober 1949, 1. November und 7. Februar 1950, brauchte es noch, um das gerade erst kurz nach der Jahrhundertwende erweiterte und mit dem charakteristischen Turm versehene alte herzogliche Schloss letztlich zu Fall zu bringen. Bereits kurz nach der Entstehung des Herzogtums Mecklenburg-Strelitz, in der Nacht vom 24. zum 25. Oktober 1712, raubte ein Feuer "dem wahrlich nicht reichsten deutschen Kleinfürsten seine Residenz" in Strelitz. Infolge dieses früheren Brandes aber wurde das vormalige Jagdschloss in Glieneke bei Strelitz ausgebaut, ein Garten angelegt und die Beamten und Schlossbediensteten um das neue herzogliche Schloss angesiedelt und Neustrelitz entstand.
