Jene Rollen finden sich auch in Fontanes Erzählung Schach von Wuthenow - und zwar anhand der Figuren der Victoire von Carayon sowie von der titelgebenden Figur Schach von Wuthenow selbst. Es soll fürderhin sich explizit mit der Rolle der Figur des Schachs von Wuthenow auseinandergesetzt werden und wie Schach seine Rolle eben verändert, sprengt, reformuliert oder in ihr verharrt. Als Einleitung soll zuerst die Gesellschaft des 18. und 19. Jahrhundert betrachtet werden. Folgend soll sich mit der Ästhetik als ideellem Wert nach Domenico Mugniolo auseinandergesetzt werden, welcher die Gesellschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts als eine männlich schöne Gesellschaft betitelt. Anschließend soll der Suizid generell bzw. der Suizid des Schachs erforscht werden. Hierbei werden Ideen wie die der Unmännlichkeit des Suizids sowie die Ehre und Unehre des Mannes und des Verständnisses des Ehrbegriffs im 19. Jh. generell beleuchtet und hinterfragt. Final soll sich noch mit der Institution der Ehe und der Theorie der Institution befasst werden. Hierbei soll eine Theorie der Institution nach Jeff Hearns und Sumner herangezogen werden, um die Ehe im Schach von Wuthenow zu analysieren. Der Wille zur Entsagung der Ehe seitens Schachs sowie die Erforschung der Gründe hierfür können auf die Rolle Schachs als zwanghaft männliche Figur zurückgeführt werden. Man könnte die These der Kausalität anwenden und behaupten, dass aufgrund der zwanghaft männlichen Rolle, die Schach all jene Dinge abverlangt, die nicht mit denen der Ehe einhergehen, die Ehe als Paradox nicht funktionieren würde und deshalb der Suizid als einzige literarische Möglichk
