About the Book

: "The Mutinies and the People or Statements of Native Fidelity: Exhibited During the Outbreak of 1857-58" presents a comprehensive account of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 by a Hindu author. This historical narrative challenges the conventional view of the British Empire in India as a miraculous occurrence, asserting that its roots lie in oriental fidelity rather than British military might. It highlights the significant roles played by native statesmen and troops, underscoring the intricacies of India's relationship with Britain during the colonial period. This facsimile reprint offers distinctive insights into the motivations and actions of Indians in the rebellion, with the objective of providing a fair and unbiased historical record. About The Author: Sambhu Chandra Mukherjee (1839-1894), a prominent writer and journalist, was born into a middle-class Brahmin family on May 8, 1839. His significant contributions to journalism began with the Calcutta Monthly Magazine in 1855. Mukherjee's association with Mookherjee's Magazine (1861) played a vital role in promoting economic and political nationalism. He gained fame as a journalist, establishing the weekly journal, Reis and Rayyet, in 1882, which he continued until his death on February 7, 1894. Mukherjee also served in various capacities, including assistant secretary to the Taluqdars' Association and political adviser to the Nawab of Murshidabad. Despite supporting British rule, he fearlessly protested against its injustices. Mukherjee's notable writings include "On the Causes of the Mutiny" (1858), "The Mutinies and the People" (1859), "Mr. Wilson, Lord Canning and the Income Tax" (1860), "The Prince in India" (1871), "Travels and Voyages in Bengal between Calcutta and Independent Tipperah" (1883), and "The Career of an Indian Princess" (1896).
