Roberto è uno stimato nobile della Palermo normanna, ricco e con la nomina di essere l'uomo più fedele del re. Di notte però Roberto governa le anime nere del Regno, essendo il capo di un gruppo di vendicatori senza identità i cui giudizi sono inappellabili perfino per lo stesso sovrano. Siamo alla fine del XIII secolo, all'epoca di Guglielmo II, detto il Buono. Il forte senso di giustizia di Roberto e la sua lealtà al re hanno sempre camminato di pari passo, ma un giorno Guglielmo gli affida la missione più controversa della sua vita. Dovrà accompagnare la principessa Costanza fino a Milano, dove questa dovrà sposare Enrico, il figlio di Barbarossa. Essendo Costanza l'erede di Guglielmo, questo significa consegnare il futuro del Regno nelle mani di Barbarossa... non certo il più amato dei sovrani. Roberto tentenna, ma poi decide di obbedire. Questo tuttavia lo porterà a scontrarsi con coloro che sono avversi all'ultima decisione del re, soprattutto con un certo Ermanno, un uomo ambiguo di cui Adelicia, figlia di Roberto, arriverà ad innamorarsi. Il viaggio per Milano è lungo e irto d'ostacoli. Roberto sa che può farcela, ma le sue certezze vengono meno quando si imbatte in Diamante, una donna talmente ammaliante e diabolica che sembra essere la personificazione del Male. La missione di Roberto si trasforma così in una lotta interiore, contro gli allettamenti del peccato e contro ciò che finora ha ritenuto essere giusto. Una mattina, guardando il mare dello Stretto di Messina, assiste poi ad un'evento sovrannaturale: sulla superficie delle onde appare un palazzo dai contorni sfocati. Non è il primo a osservare quel miraggio; si tratta infatti di un sortilegio della fata Morgana, un essere leggendario che ha lo scopo di sviare i propositi dei nobili cavalieri. Roberto adesso è sicuro: Diamante è Morgana sono la stessa persona.La lotta di Roberto contro i criminali del Regno si trasforma così in una caccia alle streghe piena di colpi bassi e di colpi di scena. Ma quando Roberto subisce il giudizio dei vendicatori che lui stesso ha comandato, allora comprende che nulla è più scontato e che forse bene e male hanno bisogno di essere rivalutati. Un romanzo che ripercorre storicamente la vicenda dei Beati Paoli e la nascita del sentimento mafioso. Un romanzo all'apparenza intriso di elementi fantastici, ma in realtà intrinsecamente storico, a dimostrazione che la percezione della storia non può prescindere dalla suggestione di chi l'ha vissuta.
