Sie koordinieren Aufgaben und Tätigkeiten unterschiedlichster, weit verstreuter und zumeist nicht gleichzeitig Anwesender. Sie entwickeln Ordnungsprinzipien, gestalten Hierarchien und formulieren Mitgliedschaftsbedingungen. Auch bei aller operativer Geschlossenheit gegenüber anderen Systemen sind sie auf die Gesamtgesellschaft angewiesen, um sich dauerhaft auf diese beziehen zu können. Dies stellt gleichzeitig die Grundbedingung ihrer Existenz dar. Eine Theorie, die sich mit der Komplexität sozialer Systeme befasst, muss diese Faktoren in Betracht ziehen. Sie muss auf Grundlage von Zufälligkeit, Überschuss sowie Vielschichtigkeit von kommunizierten Informationen die Operationsweise nicht einsehbarer operativer Strukturen darlegen können. Die Systemtheorie von Niklas Luhmann ermöglicht es, soziale Systeme in ihrer autopoietischen Operationsweise zu definieren. In einem ersten Teil dieser Arbeit sollen Grundbegriffe der Systemtheorie vorgestellt werden, um diese dann in einem zweiten Teil auf den Sonderfall der Organisationssysteme anzuwenden. Ziel des ersten Kapitels ist es, systemtheoretische Grundannahmen darzulegen, ohne deren Verständnis eine Darstellung der Organisationssoziologie Niklas Luhmanns nicht möglich ist. Zunächst wird die Unterscheidung von Interaktions-, Organisations- und Gesellschaftssystemen dargestellt, im späteren Verlauf die Theorie der Autopoiese. So können Organisationen als selbstrefenzielle, wiederkehrende Abläufe bezeichnet werden. Eben dies macht die Formalisierung von Organisationssystemen aus. Mit dieser Arbeit soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, ob es für moderne Organisationen genügt, sich ausschließlich auf formale Abläufe zu verlassen.
