About the Book

The focus of this book is on modeling new and ill-structured problems from scratch when there is no existing procedure to follow. This is in contrast to typical business models, such as the standard corporate valuation model, which apply to well-structured problems. The author shows how some insights can be developed by exploring different objectives for the problem. Other insights come from exploring trade-offs between various consequences of a particular course of action. Still others come from an understanding of the factors that are critical to success or to achievement of a plan. Finally, some insights arise from an analysis of the risks inherent in a decision.

About the Author

Stephen G. Powell is Professor at The Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Robert J. Batt is a Tuck Fellow and researcher at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. His work is focused in operations management and finance.
